Joint response from the National Forums to the leaked Mazars Report
The National Forum of People with Learning Disabilities and the National Valuing Families Forum were appalled, angry and truly shocked when they heard of the leaked Mazars report about Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust last week. The report said that between March 2010 and April 2011 over 1000 people died unexpectedly in their care and that the deaths were not all properly investigated. Forum members learnt that very few of the people with learning disabilities who died had their deaths properly looked into.
The report also said that many of the investigations were late and of poor quality, and families were often excluded. Meeting in London yesterday to discuss health improvement for people with learning disabilities, members of both Forums were unable to imagine the accumulated grief, anger and rage that families would feel, when no-one felt it necessary to explain how and why their family member died.
The National Forum of People with Learning Disabilities and the National Valuing Families Forum both recognise the continuing bravery and commitment of Sara Ryan and her family and the many other families whose names we do not know. They keep on seeking Justice for their loved ones and we offer our support in what we see as "a fight for rights". We call for full explanations from Southern Health and join Norman Lamb in saying "there have to be answers".
